Time Flies!

It seems almost surreal that my son  just turned 17 years of age. I still remember being 17 like it was yesterday; it was the best time of my life. I can hardly believe that in just 1 short year, my baby boy will be a man. How did this happen so quickly?

Well, time flies when you’re having fun.

My son, despite his alarming similarities to his mother with regard to study habits, has emerged from his pubescent years as a smart, polite, charming, talented, helpful and sweet young man. He has goals. He also recognizes that his shortcomings in studies might mean it will take him longer to achieve them. He’s okay with this, because he takes life at his own pace. He is himself. It seems that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, at all.

Realizing all of this, I got a bit teary eyed today. It’s a strange mix of emotions when faced with the impending exit of your child from your every day life. Sure, I’ve got another year before he goes to college – but a year isn’t very long; especially considering how fast the last 17 flew by.

I’m pretty proud of my boy. Letting him go in a year will be pretty hard but I’ll enjoy watching him take flight. ♥

I’m Not Sure I’ll Ever “Get Used to it”

Since my divorce, I’m forced to share my baby girl with the ex. Every other weekend, every other Thanksgiving, every other Christmas, 2 weeks in the summer and every other Spring Break too.

Every other weekend is hard enough. I try to fill my time with things to do so I don’t sit around all mopey that she’s not here. She demands a lot of one-on-one attention so admittedly it’s nice to have a break sometimes. It’s just that by the end of the weekend I’m always stir crazy. I miss her within hours.dscn2705

Next week is Spring Break. She leaves for her dad’s house tonight. She’ll be gone 7 days and I’m not sure what I’ll do with  myself to keep from going crazy. I’ve had friends tell me that you “get used to it” after a while but I’m really not to that point. I’m not sure I’ll ever be to that point. She’s my baby girl! How do I get used to not having her around? No story time, no snuggle time, no hugs, no kisses, no “I love Mommy” drawings….

So today, the plan is to stay in PJ’s and watch movies all day. I’ve got to get in as much cuddle time and laughter as I can before she disappears into the sunset for 7 days. On our movie slate is WALL-E and Kung Fu Panda. We’ll also finish the book we started reading last week, Black Beauty. But FIRST – she wants chocolate chip pancakes…..
