I am so sorry for your loss Robin. Duchess sounds like a wonderful family member who brought happiness to you all. I have a 12 year old dog named Daisy who recently was diagnosed with cancer. She had surgery to have it removed but it can't be treated. It will come back eventually- we don't know how soon though. The important thing is to just enjoy them while we're blessed with them in our lives. My heart goes out to you and your family.

I knew that Boxers life span averaged 10-12 years. I was talking to my neighbor about how I thought Duchess would not live much longer – just about a week before she died. She really didn't exhibit any signs of illness, just based on her age I knew. It still doesn't prepare you for when it happens. I miss her so much. I have friends suggest that I get another dog – even my son, who is 16, wants to get another dog right away. I can't even bear to think about it. She can't be replaced.

I have a 12 year old peke and I know her time is nearing. I can imagine how hard this is. Dogs really do change our lives.

Thanks, Ann. It is cathartic to go through my memories of her but it's also painful. I'm taking it day by day.
