What Does Mother’s Day Mean to you?

My mother is the type that prefers to be left alone on Mothers Day. No gift, no phonecall – just peace and quiet. She considers that to be her gift. As for me, I’m not into the gifts but I do like spending the day doing something fun with my kids. Really, it’s like any other day except that I get cute homemade cards and I get out of cooking or cleaning for the day.

There’s a statistic that says the busiest day of the year for phone calls is Mothers Day. Same goes for flowers. Do our mothers really want that? Commercials pimp “diamonds for mom” when what they really mean is “buy this present for your wife”. Why? She’s not his mother. Do we really believe that those diamond earrings are “from the kids”? Why do we do this? Do you really want that?

I want to hear from all of you mothers out there. Do you expect a gift from your husband on behalf of the children? Or are you satisfied with homemade cards and breakfast in bed? What does Mother’s Day mean to you?

Mothers Day: My Mom passed aways in 2001 a few months after my youngest daughter was born. I have a difficult time with Mom’s Day now. My children are not expected to do a thing, but they do. My little ones love making cards and I love that…so much! A hand made card ANYTIME beats any gift or flowers. I keep them all—for the past 24 years.

My husband does nothing for me on Mother’s Day. Oh, that’s right, I don’t have one. lol.

My kids are my world. They make me feel like the best Mom in the world every day without a doubt–even when I fail.

I really dont like to get “store” bought gifts because I just think it is a waste of money. The best gift I ever got (so far) was a recording of Katy (my oldest) singing a Mother’s Day song they did at school. I will have this forever and beable to hear her little 7 yr old (at the time)voice anytime! As for what I would want done for me…… well actually the perfect day would be sometime with my kids then everyone disapears and I can sit with Ben and Jerry’s Strawberry cheesecake ice cream and a bunch of 80′s movies completely uninterrupted!!!! Oh heaven, then Don can come back with the kids to make dinner of Prime Rib and garlic/cheddar mashed potatoes and veggies… then of course for desert more B and J ice cream !!!

Mother’s Day is probably my least favorite day of the year. The closer we get to it, the more depressed I become.

I was adopted at birth, so I never knew my biological mother. My adoptive mother died when I was six.

Growing up, I felt that people went out of their way to rub my nose in the fact that I didn’t have a mother.

I was excluded from Mother/daughter activities at school, at girl scouts and at church. (In those days, fathers did not fill in.)

Our church made a big deal of Mother’s Day. If your mother was alive, you were given a pink carnation. If she was dead, you were given a white one. I got a white one and had to sit with all of the old ladies who were crying because their mothers were dead, while all of the other girls participated in the mother/daughter program.

When I married and had children, I thought my status would change. Now I was a mother. My husband never did anything for me for Mother’s Day. His logic – I wasn’t HIS mother. (Actually, he didn’t do much for her, either.) The result of this was that my children (both boys) learned that it wasn’t necessary to do anything for me on Mother’s Day.

Every year, Mother’s Day serves as a reminder that there is no one out there who loves me enough to make a fuss over me. It’s no wonder that I hate it.

I know a lot of people that loathe Mother’s Day for many reasons. It’s definitely not one of my favorite, because I think we should show our appreciation for our mom’s all year round.

I still can’t believe you are single. Those yankees must be stupid!

Oh, Nancy. Honestly this breaks my heart. I don’t even know what to say, except that I can’t believe people can be so cruel. My comment in the original blog about “you’re not his mother” is meant in the context that I don’t think husbands should buy diamonds for their wives on Mother’s Day. I think they should be helping to teach their children how to appreciate their mother all year round and especially on Mother’s Day.

I’d love to celebrate you as a mother on Mother’s Day! Where do you live? I’ll bring over a casserole and a bottle of liquor. ;)

Mothers Day for me is time of reflection a time to think about all the good times i had with my mom who is no longer here with us. It is sad in some ways but fantastic in others I get to be spoiled by two girls and husband who appreciate me everyday not just once a year..lol I think i am the lucky one to have amazing girls and good man who loves us and takes care of us. I just want to be able to spend time with them,have a good meal and just thank god that i am able to be called mom its the best gift in the world.

There was a commercial on the other day that basically said that flowers were better than homemade gifts. My daughter asked if that was true and before I could answer, she decided that homemade was better than anything. That's how she rolls and our Mother's Days are brunches and bike rides or something, anything, together.

I get that it's economically driving to try to get people to buy things. Maybe when my kids are grown they can do that if they want, but even then I think I'd still rather have a meal cooked by them or something.

I like potted plants, but not from a florist. Also, the only thing I really want is to have a good time with my kids. We tried a new restaurant on Mother's Day. Max gave me a box of chocolates, a portrait he made of me, a magnet with his picture on it, a hallmark card he picked, and a homemade card. Annika baked me a chocolate, chocolate cake (egg shell free and everything) and made me a card on her computer. It was so great.
