My Red Wine Exploration, Post 1 – Chilean Merlot

Based on the suggestions I got on my previous blog, I decided to venture into the world of red wine again on the quest to find one that I like.

Rsva_MerAgainst suggestion, I selected one at my local Sweetbay store because I happened to be there and they have some interesting varieties that are not mass produced. I should have listened to my readers. (sigh)

I was optimistic about my selection, a 2006 Merlot from Chile called Santa Rita, from the D.O. Maipo Valley. Described as “a lustrous deep ruby red color with violet hues, complex aroma” that combines “ripe black fruits and sweet plums enhanced by vanilla and spice notes.” Additionally, it says that it is “well concentrated, with very ripe, almost sweet tannins.” This certainly sounded like all the things that I liked. It also encompassed the suggestions I received to try a wine from a warmer region (Chile was mentioned). This wine was $14, which is pretty inexpensive and certainly within my budget.

Unfortunately, this Merlot was still a tad too dry for my taste. I’ll still drink it, but mostly because I’ve spent the money on it, not because I particularly care for it. I do like it’s fruity and full bodied feel on the tongue, but it’s finish is just too bitter.

Oh well, like my readers said – it’s fun trying! Tonight I plan to attend a wine tasting at my local wine shop up the street. Hopefully I’ll have more luck there!
