The Verdict is in and….

It’s a hung jury, folks.

Unfortunately the thyroid biopsy I had a couple of weeks ago came back inconclusive. The cell pattern observed in the sample appears in both cancerous and non-cancerous patients. On Monday when I left my doctor’s office with this news, all I could think about was that he did not tell me that I don’t have cancer. It’s an odd thought pattern for me because I am a very “glass half-full” kinda gal.  I think it’s hard not to think about “what if” when you have children, though. Heck, even without children it’s hard not to think about “what if”. Cancer is a scary word.

My doctor recommended surgery to remove the left lobe of my thyroid. Another biopsy was an option but it would require surgery to cut out a portion of the nodule. Doc says that since I have multiple nodules on that side it would be best to have it removed; especially if they have to cut into my neck for anything. Doing so would allow me to avoid having this happen again, which is likely. When they remove the lobe, I’ll have the final verdict.

Cancer.

Surgery.

In my head I say to myself, “Deep breaths, deep breaths. This is no big deal! Lots of people have been through this very same procedure. Cancer isn’t in my family history!” I can’t say it isn’t still lingering in the back of my head but I am trying to stay positive. It would be so unlike me not to be! Life goes on and there are a lot of wonderful things to celebrate in mine.
